Science Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region. Grab a drink and get comfy as you learn about the importance of sleep at Science Pub: Why Sleep Matters.
Recommended for ages 10 and over.

About the lecture:

Humans spend over a third of their lives asleep, yet millions of individuals obtain an insufficient amount of sleep on a daily basis. We are just now beginning to understand reasons why we need to sleep and both the long and short-term consequences of not getting enough sleep. This presentation will focus on several reasons why we need to sleep, common daily activities that unknowingly (or knowingly) disrupt our sleep, and the consequences to both your personal and professional life of when you don’t get enough sleep.

Dr. Andrew McHill is the Director of the Sleep, Chronobiology and Health Laboratory and an Assistant Professor within the School of Nursing and Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences at Oregon Health & Science University. He received his PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder and completed his post-doctoral fellowship training at Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. McHill is interested in understanding the contributing mechanisms by which the mistiming of behaviors (i.e. shiftwork or jetlag) and chronic insufficient sleep leads to adverse health and poor cognitive performance outcomes. Outside of working late nights in the lab, Andrew enjoys hiking the Oregon trails, watching all the PNW sports teams, and adventuring with his wife and two young sons.
