Biography

I’m a cultural anthropologist with specialized training in feminist anthropology. As an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University, I conduct health services research and provide scientific leadership in qualitative, ethnographic and mixed methods. I also serve as a Core Investigator with the Center to Improve Veteran Involvement in Care (CIVIC) at the VA Portland Health Care System.

In addition, I direct the Veterans Rural Health Resource Center in Portland, which is part of the Veterans Health Administration's Office of Rural Health. My research interests include health systems research, ethnographic praxis, patient-centered care and participatory research. Over the years, I’ve explored many topics, such as patient and stakeholder engagement in research, rural health, implementation science and understanding traumatic brain injury through photovoice. My work has also focused on lung cancer screening, cardiovascular health interventions, chronic pain and evaluating large-scale dissemination and implementation efforts in primary care.
