CPB Peer Support Committee Statement

The Department of Chemical Physiology & Biochemistry is committed to a workplace that promotes and values diversity. We believe that prioritizing inclusion, equity, and accessibility is key to the wellbeing of our members and fundamental to an excellent research and training environment. We are taking active measures to eliminate biases and inequities that have historically excluded people from the biomedical research community. Instead, we embrace our differences and recognize that diversity enriches our community and strengthens our scientific endeavors.

The CPB Peer Support Committee is tasked with viewing the department activities through a supportive lens and identifying opportunities to advance diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion within the department of Chemical Physiology and Biochemistry.

The goals of our committee are to:

  1. Identify aspects of our workplace environment that can be modified to improve the day-to-day wellbeing of members at all levels of our department.
  2. Ensure that all faculty and advisors are adequately prepared to mentor trainees from diverse backgrounds.
  3. Raise awareness, and remind of the importance, of inclusivity in science.
  4. Serve as a resource hub to improve diversity, equity, and inclusiveness in the department and at 博彩网站.

2024 Annual Report

During the 2024 calendar year, the CPB Peer Support Committee has instituted several initiatives and hosted events with the intent to welcome and support members of the CPB Department.
The Monthly Lunches are held the first Wednesday of every month in a central location. All department members are welcome to attend and enjoy a break with peers. These lunches have been well received with flexible attendance and robust conversations.
To help new department members feel welcome and included at 博彩网站, the Committee started a Buddy Support Initiative. New hires are matched with current CPB department members based on common interests, who orient them to department resources and assist with onboarding.
The Committee hosted the first Cultural Potluck during the departmental Happy Hour. Department members were encouraged to bring in a dish or dessert to share a bit of cultural background, while also getting to sample an array of varied and delicious cuisines. Feedback was very encouraging, and we hope to make this an annual tradition. Additionally, we also posted a world map and invited CPB department members to put a pin in where they hail home, for a visual depiction of our diverse backgrounds.
