Sleep, pain, and recovery in kids after pediatric intensive care (SPARK-PICU)
More than 250,000 children survive pediatric critical illness and injury each year; they continue to suffer persistent morbidities that significantly impact long-term health and well-being.
Our study is the first to longitudinally evaluate risks for two important health outcomes (chronic pain and sleep disturbances) and to determine how they influence executive functioning, a key contributor in the optimization of positive health and well-being after pediatric critical illness and injury.
Data from our study will inform the development of advanced identification tools and intervention protocols targeting pain and sleep problems to optimize survivorship.
This project is funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (R01 1HL174653-01)
